Extranalities currently consists of 9 jewellery artists from 9 different European countries. Founded by Herman Hermsen (The Netherlands) and Tim Carson (United Kingdom), in 2015, the collective has grown year by year, adding Peter Vermandere (Belgium), Felieke van der Leest (Norway), Sofia Björkman (Sweden), Denise Reytan (Germany), Sara Gackowska (Poland), Christoph Zellweger (Switzerland) and Catarina Silva (Portugal) to complete its current 2026 line-up.
All the members are contemporary jewellery invested. Most would identify as being freeish radicals and not top of the class for following rules. There is nothing they all collectively more enjoy than negotiating self-inflicted creative restrictions and formulating seemingly senseless making tasks as a way of challenging their practices. Bloody weirdos!
They meet up regularly, to discuss boundaries that need to be challenged and territories that need to be explored. Extranalities follows an erratic and deeply anarchic path and measures the success of their activities by evaluating the experience from the comfort zone they have just left against the fun and games they had in leaving it.
